Ring light reviews-These Are A Few Of My Favorite Rings

It’s no secret that the ring light is my favorite go-to light in my video and photo taking arsenal. With this light alone you can create beautiful video, webinar and photo productions.

What To Look For

Setup Must Be Easy

You should be able to pull it out of the box, tighten it on a stand and turn it on. This shouldn’t be a problem because every ring light I’ve reviewed is super easy to set up.

Dimmable

Make sure the light is dimmable (all models I’ve experienced are) so you can use it as the key light, fill light or back light depending on the lights you are currently using.

The right size

Ring lights usually come in the following sizes: “selfie” size, 12″ & 18.” For most purposes, the “selfie” size is too small and you can only use it for this purpose. If you want to do any other video, photographic or webinar type of work, then go for the larger sizes. Personally I use an 18″ ring light and you’ll likely want to as well.

LED lasting power

Your choices will be fluorescent or LED. My personal choice would be LED simply because they last much longer and are cool to the touch, therefore, keeping your studio or work area cooler as well. Go for the LED. Florescent bulbs are much more delicate and much consideration must be given to portability. Also, make sure you are not buying a flash ring light which is not useful for continuous lighting.

Accessory necessities

If your light doesn’t come with a stand, get one. Amazon offers nice cost effective bundles that make it easy to choose. The stand is a MUST.

The reviews

Since all of the ring lights serve the same functions and the outcome of their use is dependent upon how you use them, I will stick with the basics of each ring light. Ultimately, your choice should be based on your budget and if you will be using this daily as a professional photographer or videographer (lot’s of travel and movement) or for creating personal videos, webcasting, Youtubing, vlogging, coaching and teaching online.

3 Excellent LED Ringlight options

These excellent LED ring lights are listed from low to high price, all without stands (see price comparisons & kit and bundle options towards the bottom of the post).

Neewer Ring Light Review

The Neewer 18″ LED ring light has a lot of bang for the buck and is a perfect “pro-solution” for non-pro usage. So, if your business is not daily photo and video shoots, this ring light  is more than you need for your video, webcasting and online work. Note: I am not reviewing the florescent version of this as it is for flash use and not the constant use for videos and webinar type of work.

Here are some of the key features of the Neewer 18″ LED Ring Light

• 18″ (14″ inside)
• LED technology
• Dimmable for maximum lighting possibilities
• Easily mounts on light stand (different buying options include stand, check to be certain)
• Camera mount inside the ring
• Plastic color filter set ( I only use soft white, you probably will too)
• Very low heat output
• Easy Transport – No florescent bulbs to break
• Useful for outdoor photo light, fill light, portrait, fashion, wedding art, advertisement photography, shooting videos, and live online work such as webinars, teaching and coaching.

This light also comes with a power adjustment dial which allows you to adjust the output according to your needs. This model has a  diffuser layer you can utilize to soften the light even more.

Fluorescent ring Light options

As I mentioned earlier, I’m more a fan of the LED versions of ring lights simply because they produce less heat, are more economical and easier to transport. But if you feel fluorescents are a better option, here are some great choices.

Diva Ring Light Nova & Super Nova

The Diva RingLight Nova & Super Nova are both fluorescent options by Diva Ring Light.  They provide the same lighting functions of the LED version with the following exceptions:

The Diva Ring Light Super Nova is the most popular model and at the top of the price point in the Diva Ring Light collection. The Super Nova boasts a wider dimming range and a diffusion cloth to soften images further, while the Diva Ring Light Nova does not have these 2 features.  They are both similar, other than these differences.

Here are their key features

• 18″ (14″ inside)

• Dimmable (remember the Super Nova has the widest range)

Lamp: Fluorescent 5400K (3200K Available Separately)

Diffusion included, a diffusion cloth  to help soften the light (only the Super Nova features this)

Solid Construction – Circular black hard plastic housing

Mounting: Tripod Z Bracket and Light Stand Gooseneck

KITS & Bundles

I’m a huge fan of bundles and kits, but only if the items included make my productions go smoother. Frankly, I’d rather just buy it up front, usually at a better price because it’s bundled, than later when I have to rig something together.

With ring lighting, the only MUST HAVE is the light stand and a carrying case. The other items may become useful in the future but to get started, this is all you need.
